It could also occur as an artifact of verbatim saves of RFC 822-format
messages and things like that.  While the project very likely wants to
clean that up, they probably would prefer to do it at a time of their
own choosing.

The other thing is that "dos" could be confused with "DOS format text
files" which also had the idiosyncracy of trailing ctrl-Z and
sometimes other stuff (although it's been a while, and the "other
stuff" may have been Japanese-specific).  CRLF says exactly what
you're trying to do here.
