Just as a point of comparison, 'openssl speed sha1 aes' says that my
machine can do:

  279.6 MiB/s	sha1
  110.7 MiB/s	aes-128
   85.9 MiB/s	aes-256

So we are ~2x faster at extracting text than computing its sha1. And
about 4x faster than encrypting it.
