- From what I can tell, the python source code comes with its own copy of
zlib, and compiles against it statically.

I haven't ever encountered a python install that didn't have it. (It is
required for some basic support of stuff like importing from a .zip file.)

I don't know how they managed to compile python without it, I'm sorry I
can't be of more help.
