[merge] progress bar tweaks

This has three small improvements to progress bars:

 * It fixes some cases where we use inconsistent punctuation in
progress messages which make them look bad
 * Adds activity indicators to some more sftp ops.  It would be a bit
cleaner to hook into the sftp network channel, but this seems to
require breaking the paramiko abstraction a bit.
 * When drawing the progress bar, unless specifically told otherwise,
always draw the progress bar bit.  This fixes the current bug where
the bar changes shape after the initial network traffic to open the
branch, which also looks bad.
