Would this be something that could land together with CHK? That would
indeed be ideal.

I think it's less of an issue to require people to upgrade to a subtree
format if they want to use nested trees. The main difference with rich
roots is that rich roots is that nested trees are only a watershed if
you've actually used them. Whereas with richj roots, if you've done only
one commit in a rich root format, you can't go back to a non-rich-root
format.
