The preferred format is the latter. For *diff* though,
I prefixed it with '***' to fit in with other messages
output by diff. diff uses that convention to minimise
confusion about what's messages vs what's part of the
diff itself.

I guess I should have made that clearer in the comments.
We should also check we're using the preferred format
everywhere except in diff.
