We've had our website in the project tree since the beginning. That's
fairly common of course, but in DVCS land it means you don't need wikis
anymore

That's fine, but if you do that you're going to have to work extra hard
to push out the message of "oh we're really a community project which
just happens to have a lot of Canonical employees working on it"

That's fine too (honest) but it does make the above messaging even
harder. Frankly, the fact that there's a real company behind it is cool;
I'd say the tough part would be emphasizing that others are too.

Of course, by that measure, the Ubuntu site should be
ubuntu.canonical.com which would be fine too. But if that isn't going to
happen, then you really shouldn't have to do this either.
