Version number problem

I had thought I had a self-consistent installation but I have no idea
why I am getting this blocking error:

|> bzr branches
bzr: ERROR: The API for "<module 'bzrlib' from '/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/bzrlib/__init__.pyc'>" is not compatible with "(1, 10, 0)". It supports versions "(1, 7, 0)" to "(1, 9, 0)".
