These tests look reasonable to me.

Daniel says that this passes on some Python verisons; I don't understand 
how that is true as this patch alone only changes tests.  Was the bug 
fixed by a separate merge?  Otherwise, I would be happy to merge them 
preliminary to the actual bug being fixed if they were changed to raise 
a KnownFailure.

The point of using Omega in the tests is that the behaviour does not 
vary across platforms in the same way as an accented Roman character 
does.  It might be worth separately adding a test for handling of those 
characters.

That said, if people who've previously been more active in this thread 
have an opinion I would defer to them.
