Best way to check if a file matches an ignore pattern

I'm curious what others think of this feature? Do you think it would be
better if I added a list of patterns to the preferences page that would
be automatically added instead of using Bazaar's ignore patterns? It
could be that the user has not set them up properly yet and this could
add files when the user did not want that. If they explicitly said only
*.java should be automatically added perhaps that would cause less problems?

Any opinions on this?
