It may work in an unexpected way... this is the way to access NTFS "alternate
streams" otherwise known as resource forks (?) on other platforms.
I was bitten by this in some Java code recently ; my process was not escaping
the colon in some names and writing the data to the resource forks. It worked
fine (successfully wrote the data out to the filestream) up until the point
where someone clicked on a link in another page and IIS couldn't find the file :-0
