[MERGE] Review feedback.

Update bugfix for 3439, renders pending merges better (though it doesn't
put a "?" on merged-in-revisions. I think its a sufficient improvement
for now - but review for the win.

There is some nearly-duplicate code, in the revision id map generation,
I added a comment, but haven't actually made a new tree interface for it
at this point.
