^- so this specifically was a red-herring. It occurred when I used bzr-1.5 to
access via a bzr-1.6 server. Which is slower, than optimal, but isn't a case
I'm going to try to optimize in this pass.

I would guess that bzr-1.5 is falling back to a VersionedFile interface, and
copying one virtual Knit at a time, which is preventing us from fetching the
texts for multiple files in a single pass.
