Looks good to me. I think it would be nice to have a utf8 flavour of the 
same, but its not necessary. Also the docstring on get_host_name() 
should explain why its needed as an abstraction.

Something like

This function is needed to handle platform specific differences where 
where socket.gethostname() behaves inconsistently.
