I think the problem was that I created my own deb files at some time in
the past and installed them and then switched to using the standard
release deb files. In the mean time I had to reinstall some of my
machines from scratch and they have never seen the packages I created
and installed. Aptitude therefore appears to have some hysteresis in
its dependencies -- which is a bit surprising and likely why I thought
there was a problem.
In the end I loaded up paramiko.
