That does seem like a good thing, but I don't think these are
incompatible at all, are they?  Your approach just changes the meaning
of the bit before the first '/', so :parent:public/../foo would be a
sibling directory to the public location of the parent branch, and so on.

Btw, I'd also quite like :repository...
