RFC: rollback commit in some situations

So, I think we should change the commit code to catch some exceptions
( in particular the invalid delta ones) and cause the branch to
rollback. I suggest this because it seems that a bug in that area
*could* have silently introduced an invalid commit, and thats not
something we want users to propogate.
