You can similarly say that merge is a quite polished merge interface,
and it would be silly to have an independent, less-functional
implementation of the merge interface via 'diff', and the resulting "why
can 'merge' do this but 'diff --r merge:' can't? questions, if that
could be avoided by making use of the existing 'merge' and all its
current and future improvements.
