[MERGE] (trivial) Clean up an assertion

I don't know why this assertion is triggering here, and not failing on
other tests.

But regardless, it seems we had a 'warn()' at this location, which was
switched to an AssertionError, only without removing the extra arguments.

This fixes it to raise the AssertionError properly, and I'm submitting
it to PQM now.
