Better compression

Robert,

*Really* well done on this. Space efficiency gains like this
ought to help our networking performance. They also matter a lot on
large, deep repositories. We cope some flak for improving file formats
over time as we learn more. Some of that criticism is warranted - we
probably could do more to streamline upgrades than we have so far - but
big improvements like this show the value and benefit to our approach.

I'm very keen to look into this code soon, run the benchmarks, etc.
If the improvements are anything like you're suggesting, I'm mega
impressed!
