I went ahead and merged a version of the branch that uses simpletal. 
This isn't to preclude moving to another templating engine later -- I do 
quite like genshi, so if we can make genshi fast maybe that, or maybe 
mako if that turns out to be faster enough for me to get over my dislike 
of non tree based templating systems -- but it's still progress.
