Matt, initially I used sftp only, as it is advocated as advantage of 
Bazaar over Git and Mercurial because you don't need to have the tools 
installed on the other node.

Now I tried bzr+ssh once, but it turned out to use over 11 minutes to 
clone the repo. However, looking at the 'top' output which did not show 
full activity on both nodes, I am not sure if something went wrong with 
this method.

Can you or somebody else here comment? Do you have full activity on both 
nodes all the time (bzr instances running etc.) or are there phases where 
bzr on remote node is busy precollecting data, but the local running bzr 
is idle?
