Dpkg with version control awareness

Joey Hess from Debian has already implemented new Debian package format
in which a source package is actually a git repository. I think it's not
merged to the official dpkg (yet?) but sources are available[1] and
there are some quite recent discussions on the debian-dpkg list[2].
I saw Bazaar was also mentioned so my guess is that some
Bazaar/Ubuntu/Canonical guys already know about this (?).
