| I get the best of both worlds by using Gmane, as mentioned by many
| others here. I go to the forum, but I do so using a standard messaging
| protocol (NNTP) using my choice of NNTP client.
|
| My main complaint against "web forums" is they're an application
| interface running on a remote machine, with all the downsides implied
| by that: I can't choose a different interface, I have to log in
| specifically to that machine to use the application, I get little
| opportunity to customise, etc.
|
| If any significant number of others feel the same way, you'll get a
| split in the user community along technical rather than organisational
| lines. Surely to be avoided.
|

The only big win that I know of, is that it can track what I've viewed across
different machines. I don't believe NNTP servers can do that. IMAP can, though.
Well, it can track which ones I've officially marked as read. It can't track the
"leave it marked read, but I did look at it, just want to come back".
