[RFC] expose knit index as separate object?

I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to make the knit index and data
objects public?

On one hand, some stores like weaves don't have natively separate
objects.

On the other hand, many methods on VersionedFile just delegate to the
index object in a knit, so making the index public might make it clearer
for users.
