[MERGE] Reduce evangelism in the User Guide

A number of users including Paul Moore and Stephen Turnbull have
indicated that they find the tone of the User Guide grating at times.
This patch removes some of the over-enthusiastic text phrases and
section from the opening chapters. This certainly improves the
signal-to-noise ratio and hopefully makes the manual more acceptable to
more people.

FWIW, I continue to think that manuals without editorial comment now and
then can become very dull. A balance is required. If the result is
coming across as smug (as has been indicated), then the balance hasn't
been right.
