This would probably be a lot faster over the smart server I guess -
hopefully comparable to git as the smart server should compress and send
the revisions in one go.

But I think this is a great example of where the idea of shallow
branches would be great. You would get your working copy (where you
could commit, status, merge, log, annotate etc) almost immediately and
Bazaar would download the remaining history in the background without
getting in your way. I hope the Bazaar team can implement something like
this fairly quickly as I think it is a killer feature and would
eliminate most performance problems when branching (especially for large
projects like Emacs).

I must say I am very impressed with Bazaar's developers - it's amazing
what they have done already and how quickly they develop new features.
So if anyone could pull something like this off I think it would be them ;-)
