Cannot branch on Windows due to file path length - can I do anything?

Well, at the time Explorer didn't support long paths, so it seemed foolish to
use them. I just checked on Vista, though, and I could browse to the deep paths.
So while not all apps will work with it, I suppose there is some support showing up.

I'm not planning on doing the work, but I would certainly review and possibly
approve a patch which did it in a clean way.
