Seems to work for me. Thanks!
Now get it into the default distribution, and you can point it to
people who complain about line endings. Then, it'll be trivial for
projects that do not care about cross-platform functionality to *not*
create the .checkeol file.
For our project (IPython) where people develop on different platforms
(and nobody has problems with strict guidelines on what you can check
in), this is a very welcome addition.
Problem solved. So much noise & such a simple solution.
