Yes, I believe so.  In fact, chillingly enough, git-like branches don't
even need to be mapped onto the filesystem somewhere.

What do you mean by "unreferenced nested branches"?

I have two modes for branches.  Either
- - find all the branches using a given repository or
- - find all all the branches under a URL
