[MERGE] path_content_summary

This patch adds a one-roundtrip method for getting information about a
path from a working tree. My other commit refactoring branch uses this
to good success, and while it may eventually be obsoleted, its a good
fit for now, so am putting it up for review on its own merits.

It is similar to an existing api, but different enough that I couldn't
see an easy way to combine them at this point.
