In theory, yes. I could look for the string of the error and use that to
do fallback, but that would be somewhat complex (requires reconnect,
searching for a string that is locale-dependent and can differ per HTTP
server implementation, etc) and still may not always work. 

It's a lot more work than adding a simple option and a loop though,
which is easier to implement and more likely to happen soon. 

I'm also not too fond of adding workarounds for individual repositories
that are misconfigured so I'd rather have a more generic solution like
this.
