It's probably a cultural thing.  Many of us spent a lot of time on Gnu
Arch, which I now term a "vcs construction kit".  All the gears were
exposed, and it was easy to hurt yourself if you didn't understand every
aspect of the design.  To me, such documentation indicates that the VCS
is a UI failure.
