x = year
y = month
z = day

Joke aside, I think there is some value in using the year as
major version number (especially since we are past the y2k
problems :), it gives clear indications about the "freshness" of
the version used and its stability.
'y' can be kept for our "roughly monthly" release and 'z' used
for releases candidates or bugfixes releases (as we do now).
So my proposal is really to start at 7.0 when we feel ready for
1.0.
