I think this is the crux of our misunderstanding. lock_write *does* mean
something. It defines the caching period where consistent revision lists
are available, where precious knits are cached in memory. This is larger
than the write group's window.
For knits lock_write is very much *not* an implementation detail, its an
important part of the interface.
