[MERGE] Convert tests.blackbox.test_add to use internals where appropriate

Attached is the first in a series of bundles to fix up the blackbox tests.

It seems that a lot of people will start developing on stuff that
requires blackbox testing rather than internal testing[0] and so having
good examples (which they can copy/paste and modify to get an acceptable
test) is cool.

These bundles won't be exhaustive, but they should be an improvement.
