Kent Gibson has pointed out that ! can look like negation.  Especially,
!approve could be read "not approve".  He suggested "#" (which looks too
much like a comment) or "@", (which I think could work).

At the risk of bikeshedding, does anyone else have suggestions about the
way votes are encoded and detected?
