Thanks for all the feedback including the diff. I'll catch up with 
Martin today and see how he wants this to proceed. (The commit logs 
showed him merging my changes and yours though I can't recall if that 
was his local integration branch or bzr.dev.)

As you and others have indicated, there is pretty of scope still for 
improvement. With the reorganisation of structure though in this one, it 
is a pain to review. I'd therefore like to suggest that we push it 
through soon so that follow-on improvements will be easier to make, 
review and merge.
