I also meant point out that your proposed alternative, "commit" is not
normally used as a noun, and so has no meaning.  Whereas the noun form
of "revision" is, in fact, analogous to the VCS term.  If the term
"version" were not already applied to releases of software projects, I
would prefer "version" over "revision" or "commit".
