Currently you'll get an error like:

bzr: ERROR: Could not understand response from smart server: ('error', "Generic bzr smart protocol error: bad request u'BzrDir.open'")

Which isn't particularly good, although at least it doesn't produce a traceback.

I'll see if I can make a simple patch to report something nicer in this case.
