New patch following feedback from Aaron and John. Aaron's feedback about 
commit-after-merge simplifying reality remains true from what I 
understand. But I'm not sure how to better explain the precise 
limitations and the change proposed is still an improvement over the 
incorrect text it is replacing. I hope this is now acceptable (while not 
being perfect).
