[merge] Make run_bzr_subprocess give better errors

Right now if run_bzr_subprocess fails, you tend to get an assertion
failure because the return code is not correct.
Which is a correct error, but it gives no help in debugging.
The attached patch adds some debugging information to help with
resolving the problem.
