I've done a little bit of work on trying to tune commit, and in the
interest of continuous integration, I'd like to at least get the
benchmarks added, and possibly a couple small tweaks to tuned_gzip.py

The gzip changes have only a small effect on performance, probably
within the noise margin (<1s / 45s on my machine).

However, when running with --lsprof, function calls appear more
expensive than they really are so it looks a bit better there.

I'm more concerned about the benchmark additions, so I'll remove the
gzip tweaks if people don't like them.
