I'm happier having them unicode too.
Seems to me there are a number of ways to get performance and have them
unicode, such as johns caching strategy, or working with all strings as
utf8 rather than as unicode internally, and transcoding for display
only.
I dont think there is a huge demand for them to be purely unicode though
- but there are unicode revisions in the wild now. [we've had bugs in
knits reported during the transition from weaves from that].
