Perhaps they don't want a lasting record of it after the conversion?
But putting the conversion program's log inside the converted directory
does seem a bit unhygenic.

I think that would be reasonable.  It might be OK to just have a mutable
sequence but given what we've just been through perhaps hiding it behind
a function or two is better.
