This was done by me when exploring optimisation routes for the same
problem.
What I wanted to achieve was direct generation of deltas from weaves, so
we could just insert straight into the knit with no parent information
needed. The opaque hint given by add_lines is indeed the most likely
route to reoptimise now.
I was very sick at the time I did this, on the last trip to London, so
I'm a little hazy about it :(
