Erk!  You're quite right.  Hmm... one way is this:
1) Enter a multi-line command
2) Realize that you're a goof and can't type
3) Hit Ctrl-C
4) Up-arrow to fix the broken text in the multi-line editor

There's got to be a way to kick zle into multi-line mode from the get- 
go; I'll do some digging...
