+1, please merge at leisure

I wonder if, in verbose mode, it would be better to print text
descriptions of what's happening: "looking for changes", "recording new
file texts", etc; just saying "phase 3" is a bit vague.  Or perhaps we
could show these to the right of a smaller progress bar.  (Really just
wondering, no need to do anything now.)
