Well, it might be useful for the hashcache.  Versioning, by itself,
doesn't read the file.  Also possibly for commit, revert and merge.

I guess the question is: if we close the file, does the cache memory get
reused for the file we read?  If it does, then our largest file
represents the maximum memory waste from an operation.
