I would tend to agree with you. Though it would be kind of fun to be
"Olive". I think bazaar has a better back story, though.

Actually, 'bz' is pretty easy to type either way. And it has the
interesting property that it is typed with the same fingers on both
qwerty and dvorak-en, just with the left hand on qwerty, and right hand
on dvorak.
I don't know if it would get confused with the bzip2 tools, since there
is probably a stronger association with 'bz' there.
As far as telling them to use an alias... It is a desire to make it easy
to use "out-of-the-box". People need to type the name often, not quite
as often as the editor, but I think it becomes something typed quite
frequently.
And having one of the installation steps be "now create an alias to
another name" doesn't seem like a nice first step.
Maybe we could default to installing both 'bzr' and 'bz' as front ends.
